BMW will begin mass production of hydrogen cars in 2028

BMW has officially confirmed the launch of mass production of hydrogen cars in 2028. The new fuel-cell models will become part of the brand's global strategy for the transition to eco-friendly transport. The project is being implemented in cooperation with Toyota, which makes it possible to combine resources, cut costs and introduce innovations into the model ranges of both automakers.
BMW's hydrogen technology: a step forward
After the successful trials of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the company will present the third generation of fuel cells. The new system:
-
has become 25% lighter and more compact,
-
provides more power,
-
integrates easily into different models,
-
has a positive effect on dynamics and energy efficiency.
BMW claims the new units will provide an increased range and lower energy consumption than the current prototypes.
Cooperation between BMW and Toyota
In the new generation of fuel cells, development is being carried out jointly. Whereas previously Toyota supplied ready-made modules, now both companies can create their own solutions — for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. This makes the project more flexible and economically advantageous.
Production of BMW hydrogen cars in Europe
-
Munich — the center for development and testing of prototypes.
-
Steyr (Austria) — mass production of fuel cells (previously combustion engines were made here).
-
Landshut (Germany) — housings for the cells and the innovative BMW Energy Master module.
-
Dingolfing — development of controllers and electronics based on Neue Klasse experience.
This strategy shows BMW's desire to develop electric cars and hydrogen cars in parallel, in order to maintain leadership in the field of sustainable mobility.
The future of BMW hydrogen transport
BMW remains one of the few brands that sees hydrogen cars as a real alternative to electric cars. The main advantage — is zero emissions, since the only by-product of a hydrogen engine's operation — is water vapor.
The company is confident that the launch of mass production in 2028 will open a new era of eco-friendly transport, strengthen the brand's position in the premium segment and make hydrogen an important part of BMW's global Ambition 2030 strategy.
