The Cadillac Escalade IQ 2028 will get level-3 autopilot: the driver will be able to watch movies at the wheel

General Motors will introduce a Level 3 autonomous driving system that will allow drivers to take their eyes off the road and do other things while driving. The new all-electric Cadillac Escalade IQ, scheduled to debut in 2028, will be the first model to feature this technology.
Next-Generation Super Cruise: A Step Toward Fully Autonomous Vehicles
The Super Cruise 3.0 system will be a revolutionary update to General Motors’ proprietary autonomous driving system. Unlike the current version, which meets Level 2 autonomy standards, the new Super Cruise will allow the vehicle to steer, accelerate, and brake on its own without driver intervention.
The key innovation is that the driver will be able to take their hands off the steering wheel and look away from the road, entrusting control entirely to artificial intelligence.
For example, during a trip, passengers will be able to watch a movie, work on a laptop, or make video calls, while the system ensures safe driving on its own.
In autonomous mode, the Cadillac Escalade IQ will activate turquoise body lighting to signal to other drivers that the autopilot is engaged.
How the Cadillac Escalade IQ’s Autopilot Works
To achieve this new level of autonomy, General Motors has developed a new computer architecture that integrates Google Gemini artificial intelligence.
The system uses lidar, cameras, and radar, all connected in a single network, as well as road map data that the system has learned in advance.
The Super Cruise database already includes more than 1 million kilometers of roads in the U.S. and Canada, and the map will be significantly expanded by 2028.
Autopilot will operate only on roads that have been pre-loaded into the database. In complex situations, the car will ask the driver to take control. If the driver does not respond, the car will automatically pull over to the side of the road.

When and Where the New System Will Be Available
So far, Level 3 autonomous driving systems are legal only in a limited number of countries, including Germany and Japan. In the U.S., this level is not yet permitted, but General Motors is actively working with regulators to obtain certification for the technology by 2028.
Currently, only Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot and Honda Sensing Elite offer a similar level of autonomy, though their systems operate exclusively on highways and under limited conditions.
Super Cruise Safety and Reliability
The current generation of Super Cruise, installed on Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles, is considered one of the safest semi-autonomous systems in the world.
According to General Motors, drivers have already traveled more than 1.1 billion kilometers using Super Cruise, and not a single accident caused by the system has been recorded.
With the introduction of Super Cruise 3.0, the Cadillac Escalade IQ will become the brand’s first electric vehicle capable of driving fully autonomously under certain conditions, ushering in a new era for General Motors’ premium segment.
