A McLaren F1 — the fastest supercar of the '90s — is up for sale at $23 million

A legendary 1997 McLaren F1—one of the most valuable and rare supercars in history—is up for auction in the U.S. The car, which is in perfect condition, is expected to fetch more than $23 million.
The McLaren F1 is considered an iconic supercar of the 1990s and still holds the title of one of the fastest production cars in the world. The coupe is equipped with a 6.1-liter V12 engine from BMW, producing 627 horsepower, and a six-speed manual transmission. Thanks to its lightweight carbon-fiber body (weighing just 1,160 kg), the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, and its top speed reaches 386 km/h.

Why the McLaren F1 Is a Legendary Car
-
✅ Designed as the benchmark for road-going supercars, incorporating cutting-edge technology for its time.
-
✅ The center-mounted driver’s seat offers an unconventional seating position that ensures maximum control.
-
✅ The gold trim in the engine compartment serves as a heat sink.
-
✅ Aerodynamics with ground effect—the car literally “sticks” to the road at high speeds.
-
✅ Limited production run—only 106 units were produced, and each one is worth its weight in gold today.

The History of This Specific McLaren F1
The car shown here is the 62nd of the 106 produced. It was commissioned by billionaire Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle. Over the past 28 years, the supercar has had three owners and has covered just 10,500 km, remaining in nearly perfect condition.

The owner carried out an upgrade: more efficient radiators were installed, the air conditioning was improved, and a sports exhaust system was added. In 2023, the car underwent a comprehensive service. Essentially, it is a time capsule, ideal for both collectors and speed enthusiasts.
Where and When the Auction Will Take Place
The auction will be held behind closed doors at an RM Sotheby’s event. The final price is expected to exceed $23 million, which could make this one of the largest deals in the history of supercar sales.
