Unconventional Asian crossovers with low popularity: Mahindra, Mitsubishi, Nissan
Asian automakers often produce vehicles that differ significantly from similar models exported to other countries. Japan leads the way in this regard. Cars intended for the domestic market are more reliable and less prone to breakdowns. In this article, we’ll highlight three major crossover models that you won’t find in Ukraine.
Mahindra XUV700
It’s commonly believed that India doesn’t produce decent cars, only copies of old-style “Land Rovers” and strange-looking subcompact cars that are bought only by local drivers from various villages. Mahindra proves the opposite, especially with its new XUV700 model. This is the first vehicle with a lighter-weight design.
Previously, the company introduced the XUV500. That crossover was made lighter by moving away from a body-on-frame design. But today, they’re producing vehicles with a unibody structure, which brings the vehicles even closer to automotive engineering standards.
The uniqueness of the new model is also emphasized by its name, which replaces the traditional “SUV” with “XUV.” At the same time, the vehicle has a standard design similar to its Chinese counterparts, which combine features of Japanese cars from Suzuki and Toyota.
The Mahindra XUV700 was developed in collaboration with Ford Motor Company. However, this partnership did not last long, and the contract was unilaterally terminated by the American side. Despite this, the Indian automaker retained the W601 frameless platform, which they successfully integrated into their vehicle, thereby taking it to a new level and bringing it closer to global standards.
Following this, the Mahindra XUV700 hit the market. This new model is larger in size, and its design is on par with other modern vehicles. Visually, the car is every bit as good as a Toyota, but its price tag is significantly lower.
Two engine options are available on the market:
- In its standard configuration, the car is equipped with a 2.2-liter diesel engine producing 155 l. s. Essentially, it’s a replica of the “Toyota” with minor modifications.
- Those who don’t like diesel can opt for the turbocharged gasoline version with 200 l. s.
The body is available in either a five- or seven-seat configuration. In the top-of-the-line trim, the vehicle comes equipped with all-wheel drive. Essentially, this vehicle is designed more for family use than for off-road driving.
The Mahindra XUV700 comes with a comprehensive list of features. Controls are managed via a screen that displays both instrument cluster and multimedia. It also features sensors and cameras that provide a 360° view, enabling emergency braking, lane departure warning, and other important functions.
The crossover is available not only in the local market but also in several other countries. There’s no word yet on left-hand-drive versions, but experience shows that if there’s demand, they’ll definitely start being produced.
Mitsubishi Xpander
A decent car from Mitsubishi designed for the Japanese market. It can also be found in other countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The Mitsubishi Xpander combines the characteristics of a minivan and an SUV. However, its dimensions are unconventional. The body is fairly narrow but elongated. The interior has seven seats arranged in three rows, but larger passengers are unlikely to find it comfortable. Thanks to its narrow body, it offers greater maneuverability and the ability to navigate smoothly on congested roads, especially in Asian countries.
The price tag for this car isn’t high, as the crossover is designed for developing countries. The interior is as simple as possible, yet tasteful. There’s only one engine option: a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The engine code is 4A91, and it produces 105 l. s. It’s not the most powerful or fastest car, but it’s perfect for family use and relaxed driving.
It comes with a manual transmission, though the top-of-the-line version offers a continuously variable transmission (CVT). An automatic transmission was omitted to keep costs down.
Although the car is only available in a front-wheel-drive version, it has good off-road capability. The crossover is also quite tall, with a ground clearance of 220 mm. For off-road enthusiasts, there’s a taller version with 225 mm of ground clearance and unpainted plastic body cladding. All of this enhances the car’s off-road capability and gives the driver confidence on roads of any condition.
Nissan Magnite
The Nissan Magnite is a compact crossover. It features a stylish, fresh design. The model is manufactured in India and is exported to developing countries.
This car was originally intended to be marketed under the Datsun brand, but due to its stylish design, the decision was made to give it the prestigious and well-established “Nissan” name.
In photos, the Nissan Magnite appears larger than it actually is. The car’s dimensions are smaller than those of classic subcompact cars in this category. This was done intentionally to make the vehicle suitable for India’s narrow and congested roads. Additionally, India offers tax incentives for cars with a body length of less than 4 meters.
This model is equipped with a 1.0-liter engine. The base model features a naturally aspirated engine, while higher-trim versions come with a turbocharger. The engines produce 72 and 100 liters of power, respectively.
The standard transmission is manual only, while higher-end trim levels come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The car does not have all-wheel drive; it is front-wheel drive only. However, this is offset by 205 mm of ground clearance, so you can feel confident driving both on and off-road.
