This is truly an engineering achievement: the new Toyota Prius can go up to 1,700 km on a single tank, using just 2.5 l per 100 km.
The new Toyota Prius LE set a Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption on a trip from the U.S. West Coast to the East Coast, achieving an average fuel economy of 2.5 liters per 100 km and covering a distance of about 1,700 km on a single tank.
The journey, undertaken by Wayne Gerdes, began at Los Angeles City Hall and ended at New York City Hall, covering a distance of 5,168.7 km. During the trip, he climbed to an altitude of 2,100 m and drove through extreme environments such as the Mojave Desert, where temperatures exceeded 40 °C.

Toyota noted that the fuel economy achieved is not typical, as the Prius’s claimed fuel consumption under normal conditions is about 4 liters per 100 km. Gerdes shared a few tips: he recommends starting off smoothly and pressing the accelerator pedal gently. You should also ease off the gas pedal in advance when approaching a stop, making the most of the car’s momentum. “The Prius
has been impressing us for 23 years now and continues to amaze us to this day,” said Michael Tripp, vice president of Toyota Vehicle Marketing. “Setting a world record for low fuel consumption is further proof that the Prius truly is an engineering marvel.”
