Volkswagen: a special path in the world of electric cars
Electric cars on our roads have long ceased to be a rarity. Bex Auto offers new electric cars in Ukraine at affordable prices and provides a wide selection, since nearly every major automaker now offers battery-powered vehicles. This makes it all the more interesting to learn about the journey leading up to the unveiling of the latest electric cars and what new models are available today. Let’s take a closer look at the products from Volkswagen AG.
VW: A Bit of History
It seems like 1972 was a long time ago, when electric cars were only mentioned in science fiction novels. But it was precisely that year that Volkswagen unveiled the T2 Camper with an electric motor, which could travel about 70 km on a single charge. The developer of that marvel was Dr. Adolf Kalberlach, an electrochemist and battery research specialist. His first creation boasted the following impressive specifications:
- maximum speed – 70 km/h;
- battery weight: 850 kg;
- charging time: ten hours.
In 1976, the electric motor—which built on the success of those early attempts—was installed in arguably VW’s most popular model, the Golf. In the 1980s, Dr. Kalberlach launched a small production run of the Golf I City STROMer electric cars. The company’s first mass-produced electric car—the e-Golf—was manufactured from 2013 to 2020. In 2019, production began on the first line of Volkswagen cars specifically designed for electric mobility—the ID.3.
It’s interesting to note that VW did not skip the numbers 1 and 2 in the series; active development is underway for them. Specifically, the ID.1, according to the developers’ plans, is intended to replace the VW e-Up and will hit the market around 2025. It will be based on the MEB platform and will feature an interior similar to that of the VW Polo.
As for the ID.2, it was unveiled as a concept car on March 15, 2023, and is scheduled to go into production in 2025. It has been announced that it will feature a new design, front-wheel drive, and a range of up to 450 km on a single charge.
