Is the price war over? The new BYD Seagull is pricier than its predecessor.

The new 2025 BYD Seagull (Dolphin Mini) will launch on the Chinese market on August 8 with some improvements and a higher price. Could this be a sign that BYD wants to end the price war? The BYD Seagull is sold under the name Dolphin Mini in South America.
The Seagull is BYD’s cheapest electric vehicle, which was launched last April. Initially, its price range was between 78,800 and 95,800 yuan ($10,850–$13,200). In March 2024, BYD lowered the price of the Seagull as part of its strategy to compete with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in China. The starting price of this electric vehicle dropped to 69,800 yuan ($9,600). BYD will soon release the 2025 Seagull model with several improvements and a higher price tag.

The exterior of the new BYD Seagull is similar to the current model. Its headlights and hood are somewhat reminiscent of the Lamborghini Huracan. The Seagull features flush-mounted door handles, tinted pillars, and an imposing roof spoiler. The main feature of the 2025 model hatchback is the simple BYD logo on the rear, which has replaced the “Build Your Dreams” inscription.

The 2025 BYD Seagull has a new wheel design. The wheels on the new model look quite similar to those on the previous version, but the tips of the spokes are different. The 2025 Seagull also has additional wheel covers, just like its predecessor.

The interior of the BYD Seagull 2025 also looks the same. However, the mid-range trim level offers a power-adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats. Another update is the 360-degree surround-view cameras. Like the previous model, the Seagull 2025 features a 10.1-inch main display, a 7-inch instrument cluster, and four speakers.
The price range for the new BYD Seagull will be between 72,000 and 87,000 yuan ($9,900–$12,000). It will be 2,200 yuan (US$300) more expensive than the current model. This move may signal BYD’s intention to put an end to the price war in China. However, BYD sold more than 167,000 Seagulls in China from January through June. Therefore, the price increase may also indicate that BYD is satisfied with its sales volume and wants to boost its profits.
BYD Seagull Specifications: The BYD Seagull is a compact hatchback with dimensions of 3,780/1,715/1,540 mm and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. Its curb weight ranges from 1,460 to 1,540 kg. The base version of the Seagull features a 30 kWh battery that powers a 55 kW (74 l.s.) electric motor. Its range is 305 km according to the CLTC cycle. The Seagull also comes with a larger 39 kWh battery and the same electric motor, providing a range of up to 405 km on the CLTC cycle. As a reminder, the BYD Seagull is sold in South America under the name Dolphin Mini. The price range there is from $21,990 to $23,990.
