Dodge performance may go electric
Dodge is perhaps the last company specializing in old-school muscle cars. Except, of course, for a few models such as the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the new e-Torque offerings in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler. True, this lineup strategy may change over the next few years. Such a conclusion can be drawn from the announced plans of the head of the passenger-car division at FCA. Tim Kuniskis stated that the future of performance will be electrified. Namely, at the presentation of the Dodge Charger Hellcat Widebody a few weeks ago, Kuniskis said that «the absolute future is the electrification of these cars».
In what form or how soon all this might happen is unclear, but the changes are probably already mapped out in the plans. That said, Tim shared that the electrified models could be anything: from battery electric vehicles to hybrids with electronic control. For example, FCA's electronic-torque system already works with the Hemi V8 in the Ram 1500. So, given the available space in the engine bay, it's fairly easy to imagine a hybrid system being introduced for other V8 cars as well.
It's also worth noting that FCA has just signed a new agreement with ZF. The latter will supply a new 8-speed automatic transmission for longitudinal front-engined cars. The unit will work with both rear- and all-wheel drive. FCA already uses a version of the ZF 8HP automatic, but it's important to know that a small electric drive is built into the new transmission. This state of affairs is looking more and more like what was announced in last year's five-year plan.
