The legendary Jeep will sell only hybrids and electric cars in Europe

Jeep has announced that it will transition entirely to the production of electric models for sale in Europe. Traditional SUVs and crossovers with internal combustion engines will remain available for the U.S. market for the time being.

This decision was recently announced by the management of Stellantis, the parent company of the Jeep brand. Detractors have already begun to gloat that this was to be expected, since the sale of these quintessentially American brands to the Italians at Fiat was bound to affect the model lineup.

But we shouldn’t take Stellantis’s management at face value. When they spoke of electric cars, they were referring not only to those but also to hybrids. For example, the first wave of innovations and the “offensive” by American Jeep models on the European continent is planned to include two hybrids—the Compass and the Renegade—in various trim levels.

Incidentally, the CEO of Stellantis is by no means a fan of completely standardizing production and turning all the brands (of which there are many under the group’s umbrella) into a single, faceless mass with different logos.

On the contrary, Carlos Tavares is striving to preserve all the brands and even plans to revive those that have fallen by the wayside. And each brand, according to the CEO of Stellantis, must retain its own identity.

Carlos Tavares is also no fan of electrification. He has repeatedly expressed regret that Europe plans to completely phase out the production of cars with traditional internal combustion engines.

But let’s get back to the Jeep Compass and Renegade, with which the company plans to take Europe by storm. The SUVs are equipped with 1.5-liter gasoline engines. These are turbocharged engines from the Global Small Engine family, producing 130 l. s.

Working in tandem with the internal combustion engine is a 20-l. s. electric motor, which is capable of operating independently of the gasoline powertrain. Of course, you shouldn’t expect any outstanding performance or maximum range on a single charge, but this is a hybrid—it works in tandem with the internal combustion engine.

The main goal of such powertrains is to save fuel by having the engines work together in different modes. If you drive in economy mode, the electric motor will handle the bulk of the workload.

Thanks to the regenerative braking system, the battery can be charged not only when the internal combustion engine is running via the generator, but also during braking.

All hybrid versions of the Jeep Compass and Renegade in Europe will be offered exclusively as front-wheel-drive models. The transmission is the standard 7-speed automatic 7HDT300.

Of course, one shouldn’t expect any outstanding off-road feats from the European hybrid Jeep Compass and Renegade models, but for now they’re only available in Italy, France, and Germany—countries where off-roading isn’t really an issue. What’s needed there are compact and fuel-efficient cars.

However, buyers are offered a wide range of body colors and a variety of wheel designs.

The new Jeep Compass and Renegade hybrid models are currently available in five main trim levels each. A limited-edition series celebrating their launch on the European market is also available for now.
