The 2021 Hyundai Elantra gets a new design

Hyundai is unveiling the 2021 Hyundai Elantra compact sedan. The company is adding to the Elantra new features once reserved for more expensive cars. This is needed to attract more customers.

Hyundai is making the design smoother and more elegant, partly inspired by the Sonata. The new Elantra becomes wider and lower, with a shorter front overhang.

The Elantra offers many new features. The base models come with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display. In addition, they have standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And that's a first in this segment. The upgraded models get a 10.3-inch touchscreen that pairs with a digital gauge cluster. The two displays sit under a single glass panel. They have several configurations and support connecting two phones at once via Bluetooth. This design undoubtedly looks more modern than any of its rivals.

In addition to the new infotainment setup, an upgraded range of safety equipment is offered. It  includes automatic emergency braking, a lane-keeping assist system and a driver-attention monitoring system. The optional package includes blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. In addition, the Elantra also implements the Sonata's digital-key technology. It lets you control many of the car's functions from your phone.

Unexpectedly, the big news is that Hyundai will offer an Elantra Hybrid for the first time. This model uses a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. It puts out a combined 139 horsepower and 179 newton-meters of torque. Its economical fuel consumption makes it a rival to the Honda Insight and Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

The non-hybrid model is practically no different from the SE, SEL and Premium models. It keeps the 2.0-liter engine and a continuously variable transmission. Power remains unchanged from the 2020 model at 147 hp and 264 newton-meters. It's likely that a more powerful N-Line variant will appear in the future.
