How do you inspect a car from the U.S. in Ukraine?

Before purchasing a car from the U.S., you should check its history to determine the number of previous owners and any accidents or mechanical issues. To do this, you can use Carfax and Autocheck reports. These reports allow you to find out the following information:

• whether the vehicle has been reported stolen;
• whether the car was used as collateral for a loan;
• whether the vehicle has been damaged by floods or other natural disasters (unscrupulous sellers sometimes try to hide these issues by damaging the headlights to make it look like an accident);
• usage and maintenance history;
• whether the odometer reading matches actual mileage (whether it has been tampered with or not);
• the presence of manufacturing defects.

Options for Inspecting a Car from the U.S.

The buyer can choose between a paid or free vehicle inspection; these options differ and offer various features.

Free Inspection

Every vehicle has a so-called VIN code, which can be used to check the vehicle. To do this, enter the numeric code into a search engine. The search results will display photos that allow you to identify any damage the car has sustained and determine its condition prior to repair and sale at auction.

The VIN code allows you to identify critical defects resulting from an accident, particularly when load-bearing body components have been damaged. Sellers often try to “fix up” such a car using makeshift methods, so buyers should be careful and avoid purchasing a vehicle with a questionable history.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to verify the condition of cars sold through IAAI auctions using the VIN code. In such cases, photos are removed from search engines after the sale, leaving no “digital footprint” that could be used to track the vehicle’s condition.

The list of free services includes access to limited information about the vehicle on the Carfax website. Buyers can find out the year, make, and model of the vehicle, but to obtain more detailed information, they’ll need to subscribe to a paid service. No matter how you look at it, you’ll have to pay to get more information.

Paid Check

Among the paid services for a comprehensive check of American cars, Carfax, autoAstat, and Autocheck stand out. Leading companies that import cars from the United States to Ukraine always request information from these portals. The extensive database contains information on vehicles from Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Dodge, Hyundai, Mazda, and many other brands.

A Carfax check involves reviewing a database of all vehicles registered in the U.S. and Canada since the 1970s. Every accident, every instance of damage, and every change in ownership is recorded in this database. Upon request, anyone can pay a fee to receive a report containing the following information:

1. Car Title – Vehicles that have been in accidents and sustained damage are marked as “Salvage” or “Damaged.”
2. Damage Report – This section displays details about all damage the vehicle has sustained.
3. Previous Owners – details about all previous owners of the vehicle and how it was used (for personal use, as a taxi, for rental, or under a lease).
4. Odometer Report – information about the vehicle’s mileage recorded during its most recent service.

On the Carfax portal, you can also find other information about the vehicle from both private and public sources. This includes data from insurance companies regarding thefts, traffic accidents, and damage caused by natural disasters (floods, tsunamis, storms, etc.). In addition, you can access information from car dealerships, auto repair shops, police stations, and other organizations.

Essentially, you get a kind of “life story” or “biography” of the vehicle. This report costs $4.95, but once you pay, you’ll receive all the information via email within a few minutes. The report includes photos of the vehicle from various sources, including some that aren’t available on auction sites.

The photo report includes images taken after every accident the vehicle has been in, whereas when a car is sold at auction, photos are typically available only after the most recent accident. This is a valuable source of information that will help you understand exactly what kind of car you’re dealing with and whether it’s worth the asking price.

The paid Carfax report contains information on all previous owners. No breakdown will be hidden from you, and specific malfunctions are marked with a red triangle labeled “Alert.” At the same time, you shouldn’t encounter any problems with customs clearance, as we have established partnerships with brokers, transport services, and other organizations.

You can find out the car’s actual market value and determine whether the asking price is realistic. If you’re lucky, you can get a car or motorcycle imported from the U.S. at an affordable price. But you need to be careful not to end up with a vehicle that has a questionable history.

Features of the Autocheck Check

“Autocheck” is another paid vehicle inspection service. To obtain information, you must provide the VIN code. In addition to a detailed report, each vehicle receives a rating based on the inspection results. This rating reflects a comprehensive analysis of more than 100 characteristics. A low score indicates that the car has been in frequent accidents or that its mileage has been significantly tampered with. Therefore, you should avoid purchasing such a vehicle.

The Autocheck report in Ukraine includes the following information:

• the number of owners, the dates of sale and ownership, and the organization or individual to whom the vehicle was registered;
• government agencies in the U.S. or Canada where the vehicle was registered;
• a list of traffic accidents the car has been involved in (including the time and location of the accident, as well as the resulting damage);
• a complete list of malfunctions and the events that caused them;
• legal information about the vehicle—including details of any thefts, crimes committed using the specific vehicle, attempts to pawn it, and other fraudulent activities;
• the vehicle’s actual mileage based on odometer readings since the last inspection.

The report provides a structured overview of all events in the vehicle’s history. For convenience, the data is presented in chronological order. Such an inspection is an excellent opportunity to identify risk factors that would make purchasing the vehicle unwise.
