The new Toyota HiLux is being prepared for launch with a plug-in hybrid and an updated design

Toyota is preparing to unveil a refreshed HiLux pickup truck, which will soon be available in a plug-in hybrid variant. This version is designed to compete with new models in the segment, such as the Ford Ranger PHEV and the BYD Shark 6. This is not a completely new generation, but rather a major overhaul of the current model.

A key element of the update will be the use of the GA-F ladder-frame chassis—the same one that underpins the Land Cruiser 300 and the latest Prado. This design allows for the installation of both hybrid and fully electric powertrains while maintaining the frame’s strength for harsh operating conditions.

One of the key technical innovations will be the replacement of the outdated 6-speed automatic transmission with a modern 8-speed automatic. This should make the transmission operate more smoothly and improve its efficiency, especially when paired with a hybrid powertrain. At the same time, the 2.4- and 2.8-liter diesel engines will remain in the lineup but will be upgraded with the addition of a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This system won’t allow for purely electric driving, but it will reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

In addition to the hybrid HiLux, the company is also considering a fully electric version of the pickup. A zero-emission model is already undergoing testing in Thailand, and the electric HiLux could be released for the European market by 2027—in anticipation of new environmental standards and demand for “green” vehicles. In addition, Toyota has not ruled out developing a hydrogen-powered version.

As for its exterior, the new HiLux will retain its familiar dimensions and off-road capabilities. In particular, the popular GR Sport version will remain in the lineup. Exterior changes will include updates to the headlights, grille, and bumpers, while the interior will be transformed with new trim materials and modern multimedia features.

The public debut of the updated HiLux, including the plug-in hybrid version, is scheduled for the coming months.
