Fines, speculation and checks on motorists
The world doesn't stand still, a lot of good things are happening, but evil doesn't sleep either. Today we'll tell you about the latest schemes for squeezing money out of motorists. Read to the end, because these few minutes can save you a lot of time, money and nerves.
The police deception scheme
Repeated incidents and a certain number of victims show that you need to be fully prepared when your car is stopped by law enforcement. The new scheme works as follows:
- the officer stops the car on the pretext of investigating a vehicle theft (the reason may vary)
- they start to suspect you of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- they cite, for example, supposedly obvious symptoms (a confused look, tired eyes, trembling hands, signs of rage)
- they demand that you undergo a narcologist's examination
- on the way they amicably recommend that you decline the test (claiming you can take it at another convenient time)
- they lead you to simply record a video refusal in front of witnesses
After which you are summoned to court, and the video shows the refusal itself without the preceding offer. Accordingly, the medical report is invalid without the presence of police officers. As a result, you are charged not with a violation, but with a refusal. Such a turn of events promises a fine of 10,200 hryvnia and the loss of your licence.
The National Guard's powers on the road. To stop or not?
As of August 1, National Guard officers have received an expanded range of powers regarding vehicles. Namely, they have the right to: stop cars, demand documents, question people, carry out a superficial check and inspection, and restrict movement. At the same time, all of the above actions contradict the Traffic Regulations. After all, by law a driver is obliged to stop the car at the request of representatives of the following categories:
- police officers
- workers at a dimension-and-weight control point
- an authorized officer of the State Border Guard Service
We stress the fact that National Guard officers are not on this list. Therefore, the situation is as follows: the patrol has the right to stop vehicles, but the driver is not obliged to stop.
Good news
Prices for automotive gas are falling. Today the average price of liquefied gas at filling stations has dropped below the 12-hryvnia-per-litre mark.
Bonus. Which fine will surprise you in Europe?
This penalty is considered the most unexpected not only for visitors, but also for Europeans themselves. And all because it's hard to avoid! What's the first thing you do when you get into a car in 35-degree heat or in the cold? Of course, you start the car and turn on the heater or the air conditioner. It seems perfectly legal and logical, but no. Considering paragraph 30 of the Road Traffic Law, we see that «When using vehicles it is forbidden to make excessive noise and exhaust fumes that can be avoided, and in particular it is forbidden to run engines unnecessarily and to slam the doors of a vehicle too loudly». That is, when starting the car, cooling or warming it up is a violation. The fine is 10 Euros.
