CATL has unveiled sodium batteries for electric cars: cheaper, more reliable and lasting up to 20 years

CATL, the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, is preparing to begin mass production of its innovative Naxtra sodium batteries, which will offer a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries. This new product stands out for its low price, enhanced safety, cold-weather resistance, and impressive service life.
CATL Naxtra Sodium Batteries: Specifications and Advantages
Mass production of CATL Naxtra will begin in 2026. The Chinese manufacturer has already achieved an energy density of 175 Wh/kg, which provides a range of over 500 km. On September 5, 2025, the batteries received certification in China, and electric passenger cars and hybrid trucks will be the first to be equipped with them.

Why sodium batteries are better than lithium batteries
-
Durability—they can withstand up to 4,000 charge-discharge cycles, with a service life of up to 20 years.
-
They operate in cold weather—they retain their charge even at –40 °C and do not lose efficiency.
-
Heat resistance—they function reliably at temperatures up to +70 °C.
-
Cheaper to produce—sodium occurs more frequently in nature than lithium, making these batteries more affordable.
-
Safety—they are not prone to catching fire, unlike lithium batteries.
Future Prospects
Initially, production of CATL’s Naxtra sodium batteries will be limited to electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles, but in the future, the technology could become the industry standard. The transition from lithium to sodium will make electric vehicles more affordable and safer to operate in any climate.
CATL once again reaffirms its status as an innovation leader by offering a solution that could reshape the future of the electric vehicle industry.
