Chinese automaker Dongfeng Automobile has unveiled a new-generation solid-state battery that provides electric vehicles with a range of up to 1,000 km and supports ultra-fast charging at 2 MW. Full-scale mass production will begin in September 2026, and prototype models are already ready for assembly.

Technology and Design

Dongfeng’s solid-state battery was unveiled at an international conference in Yibin. It features a multi-component structure and utilizes:

  • an oxide-polymer solid electrolyte

  • a nickel-cobalt-manganese cathode

  • a silicon-carbon anode

  • an energy density of 350 Wh/kg

This is approximately 30% higher than that of standard lithium-ion batteries.

The battery is part of a 1,200-volt powertrain. The developers claim a range of up to 1,000 km and the ability to withstand a 2 MW charging rate. Such charging provides a range increase of up to 2.5 km per second, or 450 km in 5 minutes.

Performance in Cold Weather

Compared to conventional NMC batteries, Dongfeng’s solid-state battery:

  • retains 72% of its charge at –30°C

  • experiences almost no degradation during prolonged exposure to cold

  • is significantly safer, as it is not prone to overheating or catching fire

Standard NMC batteries retain a maximum of 60% of their capacity under such conditions.

Dongfeng’s Plans

Starting in 2027, the company plans to produce the following series of solid-state batteries:

  • energy density: 500 Wh/kg

  • even faster charging

  • improved thermal stability

This technology has the potential to be the biggest technological breakthrough in the electric vehicle sector in the past 10 years.
