Samsung has announced an innovative EV battery: up to 965 km of range, a 9-minute charge and a service life of up to 20 years.

New traction batteries could significantly increase the appeal of electric vehicles to consumers.

Although Samsung cannot compete with giants like BYD and CATL in terms of EV battery production volume, the South Korean company is actively developing its own technologies in this field. One of its new prototypes boasts impressive specifications.

This latest battery was unveiled at the SNE Battery Day 2024 exhibition in Seoul. It provides a range of 965 km on a single charge, and charging takes just 9 minutes. Most likely, this charging time does not refer to a full charge from 0 to 100%, but rather, for example, from 20% to 80%. The battery’s claimed lifespan is 20 years, and its energy density is 500 Wh/kg, which is significantly higher than the current industry average (270 Wh/kg).

Samsung representatives note that the new traction battery is lighter, more compact, and safer than widely used lithium-ion batteries. This cutting-edge battery is expected to be installed in “super-premium” electric vehicles, which implies a high cost. Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2027, while automakers have already received engineering prototypes for testing.
